Kettle comes from Kettle ETTL Environment is a meta-data driven ETTL (Extraction, Transformation, Transportation, and Loading) tool.

This means that no code has to be written to perform complex data transformations. It is possible to create plugins to do custom transformations or access proprietary data sources.

Kettle supports most databases on the market, and has native support for slowly changing dimensions on most platforms.

Here are some key features of "Kettle":
Data warehouse population with built-in support for slowly changing dimensions, junk dimensions and much, much more.
Export of database(s) to text-file(s) or other databases
Import of data into databases, ranging from text-files to excel sheets
Data migration between database applications
Exploration of data in existing databases. (tables, views, synonyms, …)
Information enrichment by looking up data in various information stores (databases, text-files, excel sheets, …)
Data cleaning by applying complex conditions in data transformations

What's New in This Release:
This point release fixes around 40 bugs, a couple of which are considered to be critical.
A new Excel Output step, over 30 samples, and a set of internal environment variables were added.
A data warehouse guide and a conceptual overview were added to the documentation.
Major cleanup was done to the job handling and chef.
