Cancan project is an interactive utility similar to telnet, but providing some functionality that is especially useful for playing text based multi-user games such as MUDs.
However, its use is not limited to mudding. You can connect to normal telnet or any service that works with plain telnet.
Here are some key features of "Cancan":
basic telnet protocol handling
a simple input line editor with history and completion
key bindings that can be customized
input line highlighting and text markers
actions (regular expressions, simple, exact)
aliases and a number of builtin commands
variable and arithmetic substitutions
Installation:
Simply try 'make'. If that does not work, read the file INSTALL for instructions. Then edit config.h, Makefile and redo 'make'. Finally, 'make install' will conclude system-wide installation.
If you want cancan's definition files to go in a specific directory, set the environment variable CANCANDIR to that directory. It will be searched first for definition files at startup.
Bugs:
If you have troubles with cancan, see if you can find a solution or isolate the bugs so the maintainer has a fair chance of fixing them. In any case, try to be detailed with your bug reports--supply the OS type, compiler version and make output, all information to reproduce the bug. Suggestions for improvements are also very welcome.
