GisMorphix is a GNU/Linux distribution for GIS applications in particular and Scientific applications in general. This is a Live CD. It means you can boot from the CD and get a fully operational environment without installing to hardisk.

If you wish, you can install it into your hardisk. Then you get a good Debian Gnu/Linux installation rich in scientific and GIS applications.

All softwares contained in this CD are free softwares under GNU GPL or other licences which ensure your freedom.

This means that the operating system and the applications contained in this CD can be freely copied, modified and distributed. So please feel free to give copies to your friends or colleagues (or anyone else for that matter!).

This CD contains a number of applications that can be used in remote sensing and related branches. Some of these are:

GRASS

GRASS (Geographic Resource Analysis Support System) is a free software Geographical Information System (GIS) with raster, topological vector, image processing, and graphics production functionality that operates on various platforms through a graphical user interface. One of the first modern GIS applications, Grass is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). For more information check their home page at grass.itc.it

Thuban

Thuban is an Interactive Geographic Data Viewer with the following features: Zoom In/Out, Pan; Identify Attributes by object selection, objects by record selection; Layer types: Line, Polygon, Point, Georeferenced Image; Visual appearance of objects can be controlled; Query and join tables; Print and export maps for further processing. QGIS

Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a Geographic Information System (GIS) built for GNU/Linux and Unix. Features: Support for shapefiles, ArcInfo coverages, Mapinfo, and other formats supported by OGR. GMT (Generic mapping tools)

GMT is a free, open source collection of ~60 UNIX tools that allow users to manipulate (x,y) and (x,y,z) data sets (including filtering, trend fitting, gridding, projecting, etc.) and produce Encapsulated Postscript File (EPS) illustrations ranging from simple x-y plots through contour maps to artificially illuminated surfaces and 3-D perspective views in black and white, gray tone, hachure patterns, and 24-bit color. GMT supports 25 common map projections plus linear, log, and power scaling, and comes with support data such as coastlines, rivers, and political boundaries. Other Applications

In addition, the CD also contains almost all applications needed for a common user. It includes an office suite (OpenOffice.org) an Internet browser (Mozilla Firebird), an email client (Evolution), and so on. Just take a look at the menu to find out many more.
